KANASHIRO, Richard “Dick”
Posted: April 17th, 2026 RICHARD YOSHI “DICK” KANASHIRO 1934 ~ 2026 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Yoshi “Dick” Kanashiro, who passed away on April 13, 2026, at the age of 91.
Dick was born in Vancouver on May 28, 1934, and relocated to Southern Alberta in 1942, where he built his life, his career and family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Yuki, his children Scott (Sarah) and Tara (James), his grandchildren Brittany Kalmring, Kinley Kanashiro, Wyatt and Chase Douglas and all who knew and loved him.
For 30 years, Dick dedicated himself to a career in education leaving a lasting impact on countless students. He believed deeply in the value of education and took pride not only in what he taught but, in the encouragement and patience he gave to those who needed it most. He also coached high school basketball giving his time and energy to support and mentor students both on and off the court.
Outside of his work, Dick found great joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time on the golf course and especially cherished time with his grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness. He also enjoyed gardening and could often be found puttering in his yard, always fixing something, or lending a helping hand. He had a knack for repairing just about anything and was someone family and friends could always count on. Dick loved cooking and entertaining, his specialty turning leftovers into an omelet or stir fry never to be duplicated – something simple that became a small but memorable part of family life. He enjoyed sharing meals and time with others and appreciated a good beer and spirits in good company, with much joy in connection and conversation.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral or formal service. Cremation has taken place. Though he is no longer with us, he will always be present in our hearts, and we will carry his memory with us in all that we do.
