HANEY, Peter

Posted: May 1st, 2026

PETER EDWARD HANEY (4 December 1945 – 11 January 2026) Peter Edward Haney of Lethbridge, beloved husband of the late Robin Alleen Haney (Reich), passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospital on January 11, 2026 at the age of eighty years. Peter leaves to mourn his sons Matthew and James (Karen); beloved grandchildren Ayden (Amy), Ben, Madeline, Emma, and Wyatt; brother-in-law Roger (Bev) Reich; nieces and nephews; many close friends; as well as his dog Doug, upon whom he doted. He is predeceased by his brothers John Daniel Jr., Robert, and Richard Haney, nieces Friday Haney, Lisa Reich Navrot and nephew David Reich and his wife and closest companion of 50 years, Robin.
Peter was born December 4, 1945 to John Daniel and Mary Augusta (Bell) Haney, Sr. in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The youngest of four active and outdoorsy boys, Peter spent a childhood first in Louisiana then New Jersey, moving with his oilman father and family to Edmonton in 1958. After graduating from Ross Sheppard High School in 1963 he achieved his Bachelor of Arts in 1967 at the University of Alberta, where he worked in the Academic Research Institute. Peter spent most of his professional life at the University of Lethbridge beginning in 1977 until his retirement in 2008. He worked in Institutional Research and Student Awards and Finance before joining the Registrar’s office in 1991. It was here in his role as Director of Admission that he worked until his retirement. For his dedication to the University and its students, Peter received awards for long service and the President’s Award for Service Excellence. He was also honoured with the Blackfoot name ksisskstakiinaaw (Beaver Chief) from the Native American Student’s Association for his dedication and support for Indigenous students.
Peter had many passions which he loved to share with family and friends. As a young man he hunted with his father and brothers and passed a love for nature and the outdoors to his own sons through camping and fishing trips and days on the ski hill. When knee injuries slowed his outdoor adventuring, Peter turned his attention to the birds in his yard who were always well fed and watered. When not puttering in the yard, Peter loved to cook. Finding and sharing new recipes with friends and family brought him great joy and no conversation was complete without talking about what was for dinner that day. Music brought great joy to Peter throughout his life. He played guitar and sang, performed for many years with the UofL and church choirs, and was always searching out new music to enjoy and share with those around him. Peter loved and was loved by animals, especially his dogs. There is a long list of cherished and rather spoiled pets greeting him on the other side. An avid reader, Peter was happiest with a good book in hand and a sleeping dog beside him.
We are profoundly grateful for the care Peter received from the staff of Lethbridge Home Care and the Chinook Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation at 960 19 Street S, Lethbridge AB, T1K 0B3 or other charities serving all people.
Peter’s friends and family are invited to celebrate his life and share a meal starting at 4:30PM on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the John Martin Recreation Area, Pavan Park in Lethbridge. Please email james.n.haney@gmail.com if you plan to attend so we can make sure you are well fed, as Peter would want.
