1935 ~ UNRAU ~ 2012

Posted: October 24th, 2012

It is with great sadness we announce that Cornelius “Barny” Unrau, treasured father of Wendy Unrau and Shannon (John) Bruno, beloved Grandpa to Jesalyn, Joshua and Joel Bruno, passed away on Sunday, October 21st, 2012. Barny was predeceased by his loving wife, Lena in May of 2011. Barny was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on September 10th, 1935 to Cornelius and Anna Unrau and grew up with six siblings, Allan, John, Ann, Eva, Grace and Denise. He married the love of his life, Lena Klassen, on May 17th, 1958. They made many great early memories with her family as well as their “gang” of friends. The majority of his working years were with Scott National Ltd, where he spent time in Shaunavon, Hay River, Wetaskiwin and Cranbrook before settling in Medicine Hat in 1977. After taking early retirement, he and Lena spent winters in Arizona and enjoyed many trips to Laughlin, Nevada and the spa in Moose Jaw. Fishing with his son-in-law and grandkids was something he enjoyed very much. Simple things were his favorite — homemade noodles, jams, camping, fishing, sitting by an outdoor fire and card games, especially when he won, which was often. Barny was a loyal and faithful husband and father who took care of his family. He and his beautiful wife are together again in heaven. Keeping with his ‘no fuss’ attitude, there will be no funeral service. A family Graveside Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Barny’s memory may be made to the Marjory E. Yuill Cancer Centre, 666 – 5th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6. Condolences may be sent through www.saamis.com or www.gonebutnotforgotten.ca or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Barny Unrau. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORIUM, “The Chapel in the Park”, locally owned and directed.
