SHEILAGH LOCKERT

Posted: November 26th, 2012

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sheilagh Lockert on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at the age of 72 years, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.  Along with her devoted husband, Ben, left to cherish and honour Sheilagh’s memory are her two sons, Pat (Tanis), Greg (Suzanne);  daughter, Shannon (Steve) English;  six grandsons, Spencer, Jamin, Cody, Josh, Sean and Jason;  two sisters, Gayle Olson and Loretta (Hugh) Hermary as well as one niece and numerous nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Mary McGrath;  an infant son, Sean, as well as one brother-in-law, Ed Olson.  Sheilagh was born in Saskatoon, SK. on July 10, 1940.  After many moves, she attended teacher’s college in Regina and met and married the love of her life, Ben in 1961.  Together they moved to Medicine Hat where she raised their family and taught in several schools for the Medicine Hat Catholic School Board and the Prairie Rose School Division, specifically Parkside School.  It is here that Sheilagh touched the lives of all her students and will be remembered and missed as an educator.  She retired in 1995 and embarked on new adventures which included travelling, crafting and much to her delight, full time grandmother duties.  Her family and friends were a vital part of her life.  She was very active in the community volunteering with the Medicine Hat Stampede, CWL, the Cancer Clinic, Volksport, and for her condo association.  She always managed to find time to catch sporting events or theatrical performances involving her grandsons.  A special thank you to Dr. Foley and Dr. Trudeau as well as the nurses in the Cancer Clinic and those in the Palliative Care Unit.  You are all “Angels Among Us”.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 1451 Strachan Road S.E., Medicine Hat on Monday, November 26, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Philip Le celebrant.  Private Interment will follow later in the day at Hillside Cemetery.  (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com)  If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Sheilagh’s name may be made to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, 666 – 5 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4H6.  Honoured to serve the family is COOK SOUTHLAND Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4V4.  Telephone:  403-527-6455.
