HAMM

Posted: May 6th, 2013

Matilda Julianna Hamm, my mother, and dearest friend passed away on May 1, 2013 at the age of 88. She journeys now to be with her husband, Rudy Hamm, her sisters, her parents and her friends. She leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter Marilyn Leis, son-in-law Allan Leis, grandchildren Emily Leis and Brendan Leis, her nieces Inga Pollhaus,(Hans Pollhaus), Margie Heershop, Betty Thompson (Terry Thompson), her nephews Albert Gohman (Karen Gohman), Ralph Gohman (Ursula Gohman), Emil Leis, her special friend and faithful caregiver Annabel Quinpam, and close friends Joyce Ann Bacon (Frank Buck) and Brenda Fischer (Jim Summers). My mother came to Canada in 1952 from Gevelsberg, Germany to marry her fiancé Rudy Hamm. Together they worked hard and made a life for themselves in Calgary, Alberta. My mother worked for Jenkins and then together they owned and operated the Cattlediner Restaurant for many years. My parents moved to Kelowna in 1985 and there my mom was surrounded by her roses, fruit trees, a place her grandchildren always loved to visit. Each time they came they were always welcomed with fresh fruit and heartfelt baking. In February of 2000, we lost my father on a family vacation and in 2001, my mother came to Medicine Hat and lived in her own home for a short time till she had a serious fall. She wanted to live in her own home and through the love and support of Annabel Quinpam, Home Care, and family, she stayed there till January, 2011. In 2011, she moved to River View Care due to failing health. My mom, since I can remember, has always been told that she was kind, loving, warm, compassionate, and a generous spirit. Myself, my children, husband, relatives, caregivers and friends feel that we had the honor of being a part of her life. We will miss you. Familyand friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Monday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 to 1:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the St. Peter Lutheran Church (758 8th Street SE) on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Julianna Wehrfritz-Hanson officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. Dear marilyn and family, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Sending love and hugs and a poem to ease your sorrow.

    She’s

That soft breeze that touches your forehead
    and brushes the hair away
telling you everything will be okay

    That little voice you hear
    when you’re faced with difficulties
that provides you with the answers

That soft glow in the dark
    on a stormy night
so you can find your way

    That scent that drifts
    through the fond memories
    of family traditions

    That smile that lingers
    after you’ve savoured
    her favorite recipes

    That drop of rain
    that lands on your cheek
to tell you she misses you, too!

    She wants you to know
    She’s always with you

  5. Chris Thiessen says:

Dear Marilyn, Allen, Emily and Brendan
I’m so very sorry to hear your mother and grandmother has passed. I spent a lot of time with your mom both in Calgary and in Kelowna. Every long weekend, my first stop after settling in at my Dad’s, was to visit with your Mom on Saturday mornings and every Monday before I left town, I would go spend several hours with her visiting over coffee. She became like a second mother and very good friend to me. .
She was truly one of the most wonderful people I ever had the pleasure to know. She was a blessing to everyone who’s life she touched. You were so very, very lucky to be able to call her family and have her in your lives for so many years! I hope you find comfort in your memories of her and peace in the knowledge that she’s back in the arms of the man she loved all her life.
Again, my deepest, most sincere condolences to all of you
    Chris Thiessen
