1930 ~ MACKIE ~ 2013

Posted: May 15th, 2013

Irene Mackie (nee Tonkin) passed away peacefully on May 13th. She was born in Portage la Prairie and moved with her family to Medicine Hat in 1938. Irene was educated in the Medicine Hat School system making many life long friends. She met and married Andrew Mackie in 1954. They raised two daughters, Andrea and Kim. In 2004 Irene and Andrew celebrated 50 years of marriage. Together, they celebrated the lives of their children, grandchild and extended family.
Irene worked at the Bank of Montreal where she developed strong connections, treating everyone as a friend rather than simply a client.
Irene enjoyed her involvement within her church and community. She was very proud to be a founding member of the UCW. The friendships she made here sustained her through life’s ups and downs. Irene was a devoted, faithful servant of the Christian mission, who demonstrated kindness, generosity and acceptance to everyone she met.
Irene loved music, and for many years enjoyed singing with the 5th Avenue Church Choir and Armstrong singers. Irene shared her passion for reading, swimming and knitting with her granddaughter Catherine.
She is survived by Andrea and Denny (Minnesota), Kim, Deb, Catherine and Bentham (Calgary).
The Funeral Service will be held in FIFTH AVENUE MEMORIAL UNITED CHURCH, 476 – 4th Street SE, on Thursday, May 16th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Leroy Angle and Reverend Kevin Johnston co-officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be sent through www.saamis.com or www.gonebutnotforgotten.ca or to condolences@saamis.com subject heading Irene Mackie. Radio funeral announcement can be heard on Wednesday around 12:35 p.m. on 93.7 Praise FM.
