It is with sadness that the family of Joseph Eugene Gugyelka, announce his passing at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the age of 75 years.
Joe was born in Medicine Hat on July 2, 1937 and raised in Tilley / Brooks district. He married Carol Anne Helm in Medicine Hat and resided in Brooks and farmed with his father in Tilley. Joe then worked for Asgrow in Brooks until they shut-down then was employed by Alberta Energy Company (AEC) until his retirement. He proudly served with the St. John’s Ambulance Society both in Brooks and Medicine Hat for a great number of years. Joe loved working in his yard, playing horseshoes, golf, square dancing, rodeos, bowling and watching NHL & WHL hockey teams. The youth group in Brooks through the church along with Pastor Syi and Mattie Dirk of the Mennonite Brethren as well as Father Matthew of Holy Family Parish were special to him. He was involved with the Good Sam’s Club and enjoyed traveling to exotic places. Most memorable to Joe was time spent with his family during the festive holidays and summer BBQ’s at Lake Newell and Echo Dale. Joe’s memory will be forever treasured in the hearts of his companion, Vi Goulet; daughter, Tammy Gugyelka; son, Terry (Holly) Gugyelka; grandsons, David Gugyelka, Tyler Keffer, Riley Unrau, Joshua Peterson, Dustyn Gugyelka, Deltyn Gugyelka; Vi’s children, Charles Goulet, Chester (Gonnie) Goulet and their children, Maria, Tristan, Talia; Devon Goulet and daughter, Jasmyn; Daneen Roach and children, Jonathan, Samantha; Audrey and family; sister, Helene Josephine Tarnasky (nee Gugyelka); brother-in-law, Raymond Robert Tarnasky; other relatives, Rosie Tyo, David Beglaw, Ed Beglaw, Barry Tarnasky, Joyce (Rick) Hyde and their daughter, Cyndra; Dana Gugyelka, Leslie Gugyelka and all the extended family. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Joseph & Elsie Gugyelka and brother, Leslie (Margaret) Gugyelka. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, on Friday, May 24, 2013, between 7:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Father Matthew Emmelkamp officiating. A time of fellowship will follow in the Cook Southland Reception Center with Private Interment to take place at the Brooks Cemetery later in the day.
