1936 ~ NELSON ~ 2013

Posted: June 3rd, 2013

Russel Hughie Nelson passed away on May 30th, 2013 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at the age of 77 following a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marie; sons, Harvey (Cathy) and Dean (Shelly); grandchildren, Theresa (Keith), Stacey (Clay), Michael, Amanda, and Stephanie. Russ is survived by his siblings, Lorraine (Jack) Harder of Port Coquitlam, BC, Morris (Darlene) Nelson of Nanaimo, BC and Elaine Cook of Preeceville, SK as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Russel was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Elsie; brothers, Hilding, Norman, and Ray; and sister, Sadie Kammer.
Dad was born on the farm at Sturgis, Saskatchewan to Henry and Elsie Nelson on April 2nd, 1936, the sixth of eight children. He left the farm at an early age and began a career with Saskatchewan Power Corporation. It was in Regina that Dad met the love of his life, Marie Debert. They were married on May 17th, 1957. They were blessed with two sons, Harvey and Dean, and lived in various towns and cities across Saskatchewan until his retirement in Regina in 1987. Russel and Marie moved to Nanaimo in 1988 and finally settled in Medicine Hat in 1997. Dad enjoyed curling and especially loved the fishing trips out on the West side of Vancouver Island with his brothers and the boys. But he never lost his love for farming and always enjoyed helping his brother-in-law, Bud, with harvest. Dad’s wishes were to be cremated and buried in the cemetery at Sturgis. He will greatly missed and forever remembered.
