Posted: October 11th, 2013

It is with great sadness that the family of Doreen Mildred (Seitz) Kurpjuweit announces her passing in Medicine Hat on Monday, October 7th, 2013 at the age of 79 years following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Doreen was born on May 8th, 1934 in Medicine Hat, the third child to Christian J. and Hanna (Enslen) Seitz. She grew up on the family farm in the Little Plume District and received her education, Grades 1 to 9, in the Goose Lake School. Doreen accepted Christ as her Savior at a young age at the Little Plume Church and lived for Him all her life. She married Reuben Kurpjuweit on October 11th, 1952. Doreen is survived by her loving husband, Reuben; their five children, Patty Drysdale, Arvid (Evonne) Kurpjuweit, Merle (Dorothy) Kurpjuweit, Cyndi (Barry) Chomick, and Sheldon (Kelly Jean) Kurpjuweit; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-one great- grandchildren; two brothers, Laverne (Yvonne) Seitz and Harvey (Lorna) Seitz; two sisters, Grace (Wayne) Buss and Ruth (Rodger) Heidinger; many nieces and nephews; as well as three aunts. Doreen was a wonderful homemaker who loved to sew and knit and was a great cook. When the kids got older, Doreen and Reuben began to travel visiting places like Arizona, Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska, Dominican Republic, Haiti, and the Bahamas. After the children were gone from home, she helped with cooking at Central Park Lodge and was head cook at Hillcrest Christian College where she provided not only delicious home-cooked meals, but also encouragement for home-sick students. Doreen and Reuben both volunteered at the Prairie Gleaners preparing food packages for underprivileged people around the world. Doreen was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, loving grandmother, delighted great-grandmother, loyal friend, and beloved sister who will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all. Doreen’s family wishes to thank the dedicated Home Care nurses and caregivers who helped look after Mom as well as the expertise and compassion of the Palliative Care Unit at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. We will see you soon, Mom. 1. Carol Froese says:

I was saddened to learn of Doreen’s passing. She truly was a gracious and classy lady. While I know how very much Doreen will be missed, this is not a sad time for her – What a reunion she had with so many loved ones and of course with Jesus Himself. And what a hope and assurance you have that you will one day have an equally joyous reunion with her! I wish I could be at the service tomorrow but we are in the process of moving and so will be unable to attend. Again, let me express my admiration and love for your beautiful mom, my sorrow for your grief and my joy for Doreen’s homecoming!

Blair remembers being at the family farm while he was at Hillcrest. One particular adventure stands out in his memory – he was apparently riding a motorbike and had a mishap and banged the bike and himself up. He said he remembered the kindness of the family
in not holding him too accountable for it!

    With Love,
Carol (nee Rieger) & Blair Froese
