January 12, 1922 ~ November 2, 2013

The family of Mary Newton announce her passing which occurred at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the age of 91 years. Cecilia Mary Newton (nee Hinton) was born on January 12, 1922, in Birkenhead, England. Mary married the love of her life, Fred, in 1941 and they remained married for 58 years until his passing. In her teens, she found her true calling as a nurse, a career that lasted much of her life. After starting a family and living in Stoke-on-Trent for several years, they both decided to start a new life in Canada. Fred immigrated to Canada first in 1954, settling in Medicine Hat to work at the potteries. Mary followed him with children, David, William and Louise in 1955. Her greatest joy was her family and friends and she was happiest when she was needed and could care for others. She loved to host parties and the Newton house was well known for its gatherings. She was extraordinarily generous with her love, time, money, and possessions. She gave much to those she felt needed it more than her and will be fondly remembered by her family and all those she adopted who called her “mom” and “aunty Mary”. Mary is survived by her children, William Newton, Louise (Norm) Vernal, Michael (Linda) Newton, Maureen Newton and daughter-in-law, Jeanette Newton; grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Newton, Timothy (Olga) Newton, Lenor Wakeling, John (Tracy) Vernal, Karen (Darren) Keddie, Sarah Newton, Jeremiah Newton, Tanya (Alfredo) Molleda, Adam Newton and Sam Villeneuve; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Joel, Logan, Bethany, Olivia, Rylan, Shandri, Makayla, Ezra, Adrian, Gavin and Andrew. Mary always made me so happy when she came into the cafe when I was working. She reminded me of my own grandmother (who’s name was also Mary) when she asked me to be a dear and get her a pot of tea. Always black tea, from the little stash that was kept for her…

Hugs and kisses to you all.
    Love Bronwyn
