1948 ~ 2013

Mrs. Janice Ann Risk, beloved wife of Douglas Risk, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at the age of 64 years.    Janice was born in Hamilton, Ontario on November 17, 1948, a daughter to proud parents, John and Dorothy Gibson.  She grew up in Hamilton and attended W.H. Ballard Elementary School and graduated from Glendale High School.  She met Douglas in 1968 at St. Nicholas Hall and they were later married in Hamilton on June 7, 1969.  Janice worked for Bell Canada in Hamilton as an information operator and cashier before moving out west with her family.  Since 1981 until present, she was a dedicated Educator Assistant for the School District #76, a career that spanned over a remarkable 30 years.  Janice was a wonderful mother to her children and always made sure they were looked after.  She made her house a home and enjoyed knitting and sewing, gardening and cooking for her family.  She was proud to see her children grow and have families of their own.  Janice was the kind of grandma that everyone would want to have.  She was always involved in their activities, whether it be for school or sports, and was there to cheer them on!  She was active and liked to go golfing and was a member of the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club.  She also enjoyed watching Blue Jays baseball, Tiger Cats football, the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey clubs.  It was evident why Janice was well liked – she had a wonderful personality and was extremely kind, honest, sweet and friendly to anyone she met.  Janice was passionate about her family and was a deeply devoted wife for over 40 years. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her husband, Douglas;  children, Jason Risk (Kathy Goldie) and their family, Searra and Lacey and great- granddaughter, Paityn;  Aaron Risk and his daughters, Taylor and Hayley;  Amy (Chris) Risk Richardson and their family, Christian, Brady, Charlie and Gabrielle;  siblings, Rodney (Jean) Gibson, Terry (Monty) Schwendiman, Nick (Barb) Gibson and Laurie Hayman.  She is also survived by Shirley Hurren and son, Barry (Diana) Hurren, Peter (Bernadette) Risk, Chris Risk  as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents, John and Dorothy Gibson; grandmother, Ann Gibson; aunt, Mimi; brother-in-law, Ron Hayman; in-laws, Charles and Ethel Risk and a niece, Susan Hurren.  A Celebration of Janice’s life will be held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 502 – 2 Street S.E., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Dr. Nancy Cocks officiating.  Private Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.  (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com)  Memorial donations in Janice’s name may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 102 Crestwood Square One, 1865 Dunmore Road S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 1Z8.  Honoured to serve the family is Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13th Street S.W.
