CAROL CLARK

Carol Mair Hickman Clark, born December 25, 1922 in Duluth, Minnesota, passed away on January 28, 2014, at age 91 in Lacombe, Alberta.  She lived most of her life in southwest rural Saskatchewan, completing normal school (teachers’ college) at Moosejaw in 1942 and teaching one year in a one-room school. On July 14, 1943, she married Clifford Clark, a farmer and rancher. The couple made their home in the community of Gardenhead and later moved to the French River Valley as their family grew. To this union were born six children: Lois Codington, Larry (Anita), Robert (Dawn), Marilyn (Stephen) Schiller, Isabel Clark, and Sheila Clark. The family has grown to include 11 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren.  She was pre- deceased by her husband in 2008.
Carol loved music and shared her talents with her family and community. Starting at age 12, she served as a church organist for 74 years. She was often asked to share her clear soprano voice as a soloist at community events, weddings and funerals. At the end of a long work day, she and Clifford sang hymns and love songs and as their children grew they joined their parents to sing around the piano.
Her children learned their love of gardening from Carol. Her enthusiasm for growing things continued throughout her life. Each summer at her home at Royal Oak in Lacombe, her balcony was a profusion of flowers including pansies, roses, petunias, lobelia, geraniums and marigolds.
Carol had a keen intellectual curiosity. As a girl she completed her education with top marks and she was always passionate in learning more about the world around her. She was an avid reader and in her later years she enjoyed reading biographies of Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, and Winston Churchill, and learned about the Berlin airlift. She discussed the books she read animatedly with friends and family.
Carol was a loving vibrant woman who will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 8 at 3:00 p.m. at the College Heights Church, Lacombe Alberta.  Donations in Carol’s memory can be made to the library at Canadian University College.  To express condolences to Carol’s family, please visit www.womboldfuneralhomes.com.
