VERNETTE SMITH

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Vernette Nancy Smith announce her peaceful passing on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at the age of 86 years.  She is the beloved mother of Terry (Sandy) Smith of Spruce Grove, AB., and Bonnie (Gord) Reid of Medicine Hat.  Vernette is the loving grandmother of six grandchildren, Kari (Troy) Gordon, Blaine (Bonnie) Smith, Gordon (Tracy) Reid, Marty (Marni) Reid, Rob (Kat) Reid, Pam Douville (Joe Ciona) and a very proud great- grandmother to 15 great- grandchildren.  She is also survived by one brother, Don (PJ) Guy of Grande Prairie, AB.;  one sister, Bernice Beacock of Edmonton, AB., as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and special friends.  She  was predeceased by her loving husband, Doug, to whom she was married to for 46 years.  Vernette was much loved and respected by all who knew her.  She had a gift for making everyone feel special and loved.  Vernette loved her family with all her heart and soul and took much pride in each and every one of them.  She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.  Vernette resided at South Country Haven and Sunny Side for the past four years, and the family would like to thank them for the special care and attention their Mom received.  Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.  Visitation will also be offered starting one hour prior to the Celebration of Vernette’s life which will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Findley officiating.  A funeral luncheon will take place immediately thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Center with interment to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Bow Island Cemetery.  (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com)  If friends so desire, memorial tributes in memory of Vernette may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 401D – 3 Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 0G8, or to the charity of one’s choice.   Honoured to serve the family is COOK SOUTHLAND Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4V4.   Telephone:  403-527-6455.
