July 28, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Clarence G. Powell at the age of 88 years on the morning of July 28, 2015 at his home in Sharon Manor in Calgary.

Clarence was born on the family farm in the Battersea district of Iron Springs, Alberta in 1927. Clarence was the first son (3rd child of 7) of James Henry Powell and his young wife Edith Fanny Horwood who were relatively recent immigrants from Wales and England respectively. He was raised on that farm and worked with his father there until the early 1950’s when the farm was sold. Soon after leaving the farm, Clarence moved to Medicine Hat, AB where he met and married the love of his life, Nellie E. McLellan in April of 1954. While living in Medicine Hat, Clarence worked for many years at the Dominion Glass factory in Red Cliff until about 1980. At that point he moved with his little family to Calgary, initially living in the Mayland Heights area and working for Koyo Bearings at their Calgary warehouse for 12 years, before his retirement in 1992. Prior to his wife’s death in 1996 he spent his retirement growing tomatoes in the summer and traveling to the US in winter. Clarence has spent the last 10 years at the Sharon Manor where he has enjoyed the activities and company of many close friends and was well known for his little tomato garden in the back.

Clarence was predeceased by his mother in 1937 (when he was only 10) and his father in 1965 and was devastated at the early loss his loving wife, Nell, in Dec 1996. He was also predeceased by his youngest sister, Mildred Perry of High River (Apr 2008), eldest sister, Marjorie Hudson of Shaughnessy, AB (Nov 2009) and brother, Trevor (Jim) of Creston, BC (Apr 2011). Clarence is survived by his only son, Dean Powell and wife Naomi and his twin grandchildren Jacob and Nancy of the Bearspaw area. He is also survived by 2 sisters – Kathleen Cook and Helen Davies both of Lethbridge and a brother Willard (Bill) Powell of Calgary.
