It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Matilda “Tillie” Wagner on Sunday, July 31st, 2016 – two days shy of her 89th birthday. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Vern (Donna) of Medicine Hat; six grandchildren (Stuart (Sam); Ian; Erin (Miles) Goulder; Kaylee; David; Shaelynn), three great grandchildren (Ava; Ella; Mason); sister-in-law, Nola (Reg) Orich of Brooks; sister-in-law, Rose Schmitt of Calgary; numerous nieces and nephews, and three step children. Tillie was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Albert Schneider; her son, Gordon Schneider; second husband, Roy Cowan; and third husband, Ron Wagner; as well as one sister; and six brothers. Tillie was born August 2nd, 1927 in Burstall, SK to parents Reinhold and Wilomena Schmitt. She was the youngest of eight children, and spent her youth growing up on the family farm outside Burstall. During grade nine, Tillie got her first job in Burstall baking bread at a general store called Schneider’s Clover Farm. Albert Schneider, who had just graduated grade 12 from Luther College in Regina, had come back home to work at the family store. Tillie and Albert married in 1948 and had two sons, Vernon and Gordon. In 1968, Albert passed away at the young age of 42, and Tillie moved to Medicine Hat to work, and enjoy her family and community. Tillie was an amazing cook and her family, especially her sons, enjoyed her German dishes like strudel and dumplings. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting and baking. In her earlier years, she enjoyed travelling locally, as well as places like Hawaii, Alaska and Israel (with her Church). An active member of the Victory Lutheran Church until her later years, Tillie enjoyed her faith and community. Tillie had a good sense of humor, a quiet, steadfast manner, and a courageous spirit. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritans and the Medicine Hat Hospital for their loving care. The Funeral Service will be held at Victory Lutheran Church, 2793 Southview Drive SE, on Friday, August 26th, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. with Diaconal Minister Lila de Waal and Reverend James C. Bredeson co-officiating. Lunch will follow at the Church Fellowship Hall. A Private Family Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
