In peace and surrounded by family, Barb (Barby) joined her life-long love and husband, Ray, and her two daughters, Debra and Shelaine. Barb was born in Regina to Bessie (†) and Herbert (†) Hogg, and was raised on a farm with her two brothers, Jim (†) and Herold (†). As a little girl, Barb spent much of her time helping in the family’s general store. At the age of 15, she met Ray at a country dance, and it was true love at first sight. She was educated in Regina and became a teacher, after which she taught in a one-room school house in southern Saskatchewan. Barb loved teaching, but she loved Ray more, following him to every RCMP posting he held in Manitoba. Together, they started their family in Reston, and welcomed the last of seven children in Lynn Lake.
Anyone that knew Barb saw her empathy, sense of humour, and compassion. There was always extra food on the table for any who needed a meal, or just the company. From cabbage rolls, to meatballs, to pierogis and game meat, Barb was always cooking up a storm for the many hungry (and happy) mouths she fed. You could often find her with her back to a roaring fire and a bubbling pot of “stovies” while she prepared to cook-up the family’s catch of the day. And, for those in need, Barb always made sure there was an extra bed for them to rest their troubles. She truly was compassion embodied.
Barb and her family moved to Medicine Hat in 1975 and continued to build a wonderful life. She loved animals and working outside, and there was always a dog on the porch, and a garden in the earth. Ever the explorers, in around 1988, deciding their city garden wasn’t quite enough, Barb and Ray moved to Craig Farg Farm, Saskatchewan. Outside the walls of their old stone house, Barb tended to her many gardens. She and Ray extended their love of animals to include sheep, chickens, geese, and an old bull. Many family celebrations were held at the farm; however, after about a decade, with an ever-growing family, they returned to Medicine Hat to spend their Golden Years with the ones they love.
Barb leaves to cherish her memory so many, and will be forever loved by her family. Her children, Ken Moore, Debra (†) (Wayne) Blanchard, Kevin (Loralee) Moore, Shelaine (†) Schau, Tim (Phai) Moore, Lisa (Stephen) O’Brien, and Patrick (Tina) Moore. Barb is also beloved to her ten grandchildren, Nolyn Moore, Tasha (Louis) Barata, Billie-Jo Blanchard, Mitchel (Stephanie) Blanchard, Terrance (Dani) Moore, Richard (Laura) Moore, Jennifer Schau, Allan Schau, Jesse O’Brien, and Sarah O’Brien. She will forever be remembered by her great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, in-laws, the caring staff at Riverview Care Centre, and any who had the pleasure of knowing her warm, smiling face.
A Celebration of Barb’s Life will be held at Echo Dale Regional Park, Swim Centre, on Saturday, December 10th, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Bring your appetite and a story. Memorial gifts in Barb’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, #201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6. Dear Lisa,

I am so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. I remember caring for her during my time on staff at Riverview. I used to walk with her down to the AC nursing station where you would be working so we could visit for a little while. I really thought a lot of Barb and I know you will miss her very much!
May she rest peacefully and dance with the angels!

    -Ashley
