It is with tremendous sadness that our family announces the passing of husband, father and papa, John R. Hammel. John was born on February 21, 1927, in Prelate, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully on December 5, 2016, after a long but courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ada; children, Kathy, Scott (Sandra) and Ken (Christie); his beloved grandchildren, Aubrey, Mitchell, Kelly, Alison, Maggie, Laura, Alex and Ben. John is also survived by his sisters, Rose (Joe) Thome of Moose Jaw, SK., and Emily Hammel of Medicine Hat; his brother, Phil (Jackie †) Hammel of Saskatoon, and by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews who loved his company. John was predeceased by his brother, Joe (Geraldine) Hammel. Before his retirement in 1983, John enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an educator and principal at McCoy High School in Medicine Hat. He is remembered fondly by the many graduates of McCoy over his 20 years of leadership and guidance. The Celebration of John’s life and contributions to his community will take place at St. Patrick’s Church, 238 – 2 Avenue NE, Medicine Hat with a Catholic Funeral Mass on Friday, December 9, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Father Tomy Manjaly celebrant. All who knew him are invited to celebrate with us.
