1924 ~ INEZ BAUMBACH ~ 2017

Posted: April 6th, 2017

Vera “Inez” Minota Baumbach was born on February 23rd, 1924 in Calgary, Alberta to Edith and Frederick Appleyard, of Bradford, Yorkshire, England. After a short time in Medicine Hat, the family moved to Walsh, where her parents operated a general store. Mom was a good student, and an excellent athlete, participating in many sports. She graduated from Irvine High School in 1942 and went on to nursing school in Medicine Hat, graduating in 1945. She often told stories about her experiences there, and she made many long-term friends. She was the last member of her nursing class to pass away. Mom was a kind, caring person, and this was evident in her nursing career. She worked as a “visiting nurse” in Calgary, travelling by bus to take care of her patients. She also worked in Brooks as a surgical nurse. Her favourite, though, was working labour/maternity at the Medicine Hat Hospital. She also worked at the Auxiliary Hospital, Central Park Lodge, and the Baptist Haven of Rest. Mom was an active member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, The Wildey Rebekah Lodge, and the nurses’ alumni. Mom was an awesome, caring parent, driving us around for sporting events, cooking, cleaning and most especially playing cards and board games with us – even when we were adults. Family dinners often ended with a rambunctious game of Aggravation, with much laughter. She also loved to play crib and Yahtzee. Even when her memory started to fail her, she was a wicked Yahtzee player. Inez is survived by her daughter, Joan (Greg) Cote; her son, Donald (Lisa), and their families. She was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, Fred; and her five brothers and sisters. A Come and Go Celebration of Life will be held at SAAMIS CREEKSIDE CENTRE, #11 Dunmore Road SE, on Saturday, April 8th, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Memorial gifts in Inez’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society, #201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6, or to the Margery E.
