Irma had spent a life of service to her family, her students, and the community. She taught students in Vincent Massey School, Riverside School, Medicine Hat High School, and Medicine Hat College. In addition to being a teacher librarian, she taught art, math, English, French, German, and a broad range of high school options, winning provincial awards in art, English, and German. She was selected by the Department of Education to manage and coordinate the Student Exchange Program with the schools in Bavaria, Germany, for students from across Alberta.
