1923 ~ DOREEN BYAM ~ 2018
Posted: February 13th, 2018Doreen Byam of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Raymond Byam, passed away on Friday, February 9th, 2018 at the age of 94 years. Doreen leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Richard (Marilyn) Byam of Rycroft, Alberta and Philip Byam of Redcliff; four grandchildren, Tracey Byam, James (Priscilla) Byam, Scott (Tonya) Byam and Anthony Byam; seven great grandchildren, Katelyn, Jessica, Savana, Celena, Kelin, Amber and Jace; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Byam; her parents, Alfred and Elizabeth Touzel; one brother, Philip Touzel; and one sister, Elsie Collas. Doreen was born on July 13th, 1923 in St. Saviour, Jersey, Channel Islands. During Word War II she and her family were evacuated to Farley Green, England. It was during this time that Doreen met and married Raymond. They married on April 8th, 1944 at Albury, England. After the war Doreen came to Canada as a war bride and had to make many adjustments – no electricity, no running water and no inside bathrooms. At first they lived in Bow Island where Richard was born. They relocated to Redcliff where Philip was born. Redcliff has remained her home since. After her sons grew she operated a kindergarten and worked for the Redcliff School District and had many fond memories of all the children she encountered in the 35 combined years of service. She also served for 32 years in the Cub Scouts as an Akela. Doreen will always be remembered for her passion to knit. Many people have enjoyed her talent as she gave much of her creations to the Women’s Shelter or anyone else in need of scarfs or mittens. However, her greatest love is her family. Doreen’s family would like to thank Dr. Hall and the Management and staff at River Ridge for their wonderful care over the years. The Funeral Service will be held at ST. AMBROSE ANGLICAN CHURCH, 505 – 5th Street SE, Redcliff, on Thursday, February 15th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. David J. Carter and Lay Reader Eldean Parnall co-officiating. Interment will follow at Redcliff Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Doreen’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society, 201, 770 – 6th Street SW, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 4J6. My condolences to Rick and Philip and your families. You are right memories of a lovely lady I called aunt Doreen will not be forgotten . We had such happy times together when we were young and while that was some time ago they are very vivid in my memory. My heart and love go out to you today . Love Karen .
Dear Phil and family: So sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. Our deepest sympathy. Dave and Toni-Ann.
I visited Redcliff and spent time with Ray and Doreen. We went to Grande Prairie and back in their motorhome. Two of the nicest people I have ever met. I still think about and talk about them now.
I have many treasured memories.
My condolences to all.
