April 30, 1941 ~ April 16, 2019

It is with heavy hearts that we give thanks for the life we shared with our loving husband, father, and grandfather; Roland Robert Gnam who passed away at home on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the age of 77 years. Roland’s cherished memory will remain in the hearts of his wife, Shirley; children, Warren, Shawn, and Corinne (Daryl Hansen); grandchildren, Keyana, Kamina, and Kyden Moore and Kiara and Peyton Gnam; Daryl’s children, Adam and Zachary; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Roland was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Molly Gnam as well as his two older siblings, Herb Gnam and Margaret Fitzhenry. We will miss his gentle spirit, loving words of wisdom, and sense of humor. Roland shared 57 beautiful and loving years together with the love of his life, Shirley Ann. Roland and Shirley were married on January 26, 1962 in a candlelight ceremony at Westminster United Church in Medicine Hat, AB. Roland was born on April 30, 1941 in Medicine Hat, AB, raised and educated in Medicine Hat and spent 29 years teaching with the Medicine Hat School District. Roland enjoyed singing songs, music, and playing guitar. He knew the words to hundreds of songs and loved to bring his joy of music and poetry into his daily life. Roland was also an avid golfer and maintained a continuous membership at the Connaught Golf Club for 45 years. Roland was fortunate to have aced 3 holes-in-one during his many years of golfing. Upon his retirement in 1996, Roland was able to travel, spend precious time with his grandchildren, tend to his garden and keep fit at the YMCA. Roland’s words of wisdom will resonate in our hearts forever: “Be good and wear your red hood and maybe in the spring I’ll come back and sing!” A Celebration of Roland’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. The family welcomes you to join in fellowship and a luncheon following the service at The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club.
