Posted: January 5th, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce that John Harvey Leask of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, December 28th, 2020 at the age of 89 years. John is survived by his son, George “Geo” Leask (Selena Fisher); daughter, Vivian Leask; grandchildren, Mitchell Leask (Sam Morris), Matthew Leask, Natasha (Chris) Kennett, Christina Duncan, and George Roti; great-grandchildren, Maddy-Mae, Ember, and Hope; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Norma Leask; daughter, Connie Marie in infancy; brothers, Joe and Richard; and sisters, Vivian, Beverly, and Mary. John was born on November 24, 1931 and raised on the family farm near Spalding, SK. John worked hard on the farm and quickly realized that in order to keep things going and to keep the farm productive, it was essential for him to become inventive as well as to develop many different skills. His experiences on the farm allowed him to become competent in both heavy duty mechanics and welding. After years of rigorous work on the farm, John made the decision to enlist in the army. His experiences as an enlisted man offered him the opportunity to learn additional and enjoyable specialties that would serve him well in his future. After his discharge form the army, he worked hard to support his family. They moved to BC, where work was even more demanding. John encountered many hurdles working hard in BC, SK, and then eventually settling in in Alberta. After a brief stint in Strathmore and then Brooks, John moved to Medicine Hat in 1989 where he was able to utilize his numerous skills and knowledge working for Quoyloo Enterprises offering sharpening services. John employed techniques that were both innovative and unique and he continued this path until his retirement. John was a proud Metis citizen and was very active with the Metis Nation of Alberta. He would often pass time sharing his unique sense of humour with the girls at the Miywasin Centre and they, and others who he encountered, will greatly miss his visits. John was also a proud Legion member – this year was his 60th year – earning him a badge of honour for his lengthy commitment to the local branch. John was challenged with both hearing and visual impairments in his senior years, but it did not stop him form enjoying weekly Scottish country dancing or Sunday morning services at his favourite Westminster United and Fifth Avenue United churches. The family would like to thank the staff at Meadowlands Retirement Home and good friend, Richard Winterholt for their aid and support during John’s final years. Special thanks to Dan Pede for all the care and comfort he provided and for being there for John during the many challenging years and struggles with his hearing and visual impairments.
