1946 – 2021

George passed away on Tuesday, May 25th, 2021, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Mimi; two sons, Jeremy and Dillon (Bobbi) Derksen; three grandchildren, Caius, Micah and Liam; five brothers, Bill, Pete (Vi), Jake (Edna), John (Ikelina), Ben (Marianne); four sisters, Sue (Ernest) Friesen, Anna Derksen, Margaret (Geoff) Nickol and Agnes VanderWal; numerous nieces and nephews; many friends.

George was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Susana Derksen, both born in Blumenthal, Saskatchewan; three brothers, Henry, Dave and Abe; two sisters, Kay and Betty.

George was born near Hague, SK and as a toddler his family moved to Taber area where George was educated. Post-graduation, brother Jake in Vernon, BC, offered to apprentice him as an upholsterer and invited him to attend Vernon Alliance Church. It was at this time that George became born of God. He met Mimi shortly after and married her in 1967. They moved several times, the last move being to Medicine Hat where they raised their two sons. Brother John and George formed Central Upholstery where they were in business together until retirement. George made many friends, but no one was more loved than his family. A sports enthusiast, George also enjoyed classic cars (Fords) and singing in the choir. He was an expert craftsman, lover of truth and justice, an honest communicator, and never duplicitous. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held later in June with attendance by invitation only. Condolences may be made at www.gracememorial.com.

3 Condolences for “GEORGE DERKSEN”

  1. John and Audrey Hill says:

Our sincere condolences to Mimi, Jeremy and Dillon.
We remember George as a friendly person with a welcoming smile, a helpful person who took an interest in other people, a faithful member of the Crestwood congregation, a man with a passion for cars and a good upholsterer! Our old couch was transformed in his shop. How much you will miss him! You are in our thoughts and prayers. May you know the nearness of God’s presence and the surety that your family will be reunited again.

  2. Curtis and Michele Friesen says:

Aunt Mimi Jeremy and Dylan, Our condolences to you all. I have fond memories from the visits we had when we lived in BC and all the family get-togethers. I will always remember him as a warm person with his signature smile tempered with the Derksen sensitivity. We are praying that God’s presence is with you at this time and moving forward.

  3. Pat and Wilton Thorsteinson says:

We offer our condolences to each person of George’s family and friends, the people who knew and loved George the most, and to each neighbour and acquaintance of George.
