FERNE GILL

Posted: September 7th, 2021

The family of Ferne Marie Gill are sad to announce her passing on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 95 years of age. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Gill, mother of Cheryl Crofford, Bonnie (Gary) Davies, Russell (Anita) Gill and Rodney (Terry) Gill. She is survived by her sister Shirley (Doug) Colton and brother Leslie (Fran Stevenson) Legros. Her brothers Stanley Legros, Don Legros, Bill (Marg) Legros and Art (Betty) Legros predeceased her. Ferne had ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Ferne was born in Rosetown on May 18, 1926. She came from a family of five brothers and one sister. She was the second oldest. Her father Ben Legros was a school teacher, so she grew up in various small towns in her early years. In 1946 she left for Toronto to take a three year nursing course. Meanwhile her parents had moved to Leader the year she graduated, and she decided to come to Leader and get a job nursing at the hospital. A short time after she arrived, a local farmer named Bob Gill took an interest in the school teacher’s daughter and within a very short courtship, wedding vows were exchanged. Ferne had a very short nursing career as she had four kids in five years. Over the years, Ferne was involved in C.G.I.T., teaching Sunday school and cooking for various hired men and hockey players who boarded at their place. She gave the boys haircuts and sewed clothes for all the kids. She was quite talented in that area. She enjoyed playing the piano and accompanied the kids in musical get togethers.

A highlight of their lives was trips to California in the winter time. They started going down in the sixties and eventually bought a place in Palm Desert in 1978 and wintered there until 2004. They made many friends in those years and Ferne became quite a golfer. She still golfed regularly at the Leader course into her 90’s.

She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and lit up just being around them. She will be sorely missed. She lived life to the fullest to the very end. She carried on with a positive attitude no matter what the obstacles and always put others first.

At Ferne’s request, no services will be held at this time. Memorial donations in Ferne’s memory may be made to “The Canadian Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan”, 200 – 4545 Parliament Avenue, Regina, SK, S4W 0G3
