1931 ~ 2022

Hugh Alexander Varty, beloved husband of Doreen Varty, passed away in Medicine Hat, AB., on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at the age of 90 years. He was born in Edgerton, Alberta on April 29, 1931, to Truman and Ida May Varty. Hugh married the love of his life, Doreen Margret Miller on December 23, 1968, in Marwayne, Alberta sharing in 53 years together. His career was working for CPR as a Station Agent for many years. Hugh was very humorous and loved visiting with everyone. His enjoyment and thrill was being in the museum when school children came for tours so he could teach them the ‘dash and dot’ system (Moris code) on the telegraph. Hugh was a long standing member of the Elks, Wa Wa Shriners and the Masons.

“God saw you getting tired,

and a cure was not to be.

He wrapped you in his loving arms

and whispered, “come to me”.

You suffered much in silence,

your spirit did not bend,

you faced your pain with courage

until the very end.

You tried so hard to stay with us,

your fight was all in vain,

God took you to his loving home

and freed you from your pain.

A golden heart stopped beating,

two working hands at rest,

God broke our hearts to prove to us

He only takes the best.”

Hugh will be lovingly remembered in the hearts of his wife, Doreen Varty; children, Catherine (Richard) Klein, Pat (Eldon) Geiger, William (Erin) Varty; grandchildren, Monica Geiger, Monty Geiger, Dustin Klein; great-grandchildren, Login Geiger and Keiden Geiger; also survived by his niece, Sharon Harwood and her children, Markley and Nathan Harwood and nephew, Allan Johnson.
