FRANEY KAPADIA February 11, 1933 – November 8, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother (Mama), grandmother (Grams), mentor, and friend Franey Kapadia. Franey passed peacefully on November 8, 2023, at the age of 90, surrounded by her family.
Franey was born on February 11, 1933, in Pune, India, and went on to lead a life of kindness and service. After graduating from Wadia College with a BSc she worked as a laboratory technician at a TB clinic in India, a primary school teacher in Uganda, and retired in 1996 after 20 years of working as an administrative assistant for the Medicine Hat Health Unit. During her cherished recounts of these journeys and many more ranging conversations, her often humbly overlooked intelligence and insight would shine through.
In 1958, Franey married the love of her life Noshir Kapadia. They lived most of their life in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where they raised their family and embraced active roles in their community. Franey loved the more gentle aspects of her life and could often be found reading for hours, participating joyfully in music and singing with friends and family, travelling, cooking, sewing and crafting, and enthusiastically volunteering for various charities and foundations. Still, it was during scrabble and card games that her family was reminded of her fiercely competitive side and subtle wit. Above all else, the most precious thing in Franey’s life was the time she spent with her children and grandchildren.
Franey is survived by her daughter Shehnaz (Richard) Wierenga; daughter Binaifer Kapadia and grandson Logan Kapadia-Pfob; daughter Roxzana (Joe) McNiven and granddaughters Mackenzie and Brooke McNiven. She is also survived by her brother in-law Kersi (Thrity) Kapadia, sisters in-law Armaity and Roshan Kapadia, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Franey is predeceased by her husband Noshir, grandson David Wierenga, her parents Banoobai and Kaikobad Kaikobad, three siblings Aloo (Khurshed), Sherosh (Jeroo), and Jaloo (Rusi). She is also predeceased by her in-laws Roshan and Fakirji Kapadia, and brothers in-law Pervez and Nani Kapadia.
Funeral arrangements are in care of Serenity Funeral Services (Spruce Grove, AB). A private family ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2023, to be followed by a public celebration of life at a later date. For those who wish to view the November ceremony, please visit the link included on Serenity Funeral Services’ website (www.serenity.ca/obituaries); livestreaming will begin at 1 pm. Family would like to also acknowledge with deepest gratitude the caring hands at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital who guided Franey through her final days.
In lieu of flowers, please direct memorial tributes to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of one’s personal choosing.
