With deep love and respect, we announce the passing of Valerie Jean Halladay (née Rice) on June 5, 2025, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She was 78.
Born in Lethbridge on October 26, 1946, Val was the eldest child of Ruth Ririe and Wesley Rice. Val grew up in and around the small town of Magrath. She spent the first several years of her life on the farm. She loved picking wildflowers and spending time with the animals. She was a great student, and in high school, she joined the ranks of the cheerleading squad. After graduation, Val attended the nursing program at Brigham Young University. She graduated in August of 1966, and so began a lifelong career in nursing. Val was a very well respected and well-loved Nurse on 4 West at the Medicine Hat Hospital, where she spent the majority of her career.
Val married the love of her life, John Halladay, on June 14, 1975. They raised three boys together, Jerry, Lindsey and Nathan. Val loved spending time on the acreage down in Paramatta Valley. She spent most of her free time outside tending her vegetable garden, fruit trees and flowers. She loved canning and home preparedness and was so generous with the produce that the acreage produced.
In December 1997, Val and John became grandparents and as the saying goes, something magical happens when parents turn into grandparents. Val loved being a grandma and her grandkids could tell. She supported them in sports, music and anything that they did. She loved cooking for them and making sure that everyone was happy and healthy.
Val was also known for her beautiful petit point, amazing and cozy quilts that each one of her boys and grandchildren were the recipients of, as well as her love of basketball. She would quote stats and players names with anyone who shared the same interest. Val was a devoted member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and loved attending the temple in Cardston. In 2023, Val and John made the move into town, and they enjoyed life at River Ridge Seniors Village. Val’s life changed drastically last summer when she lost John. She missed him dearly and is now reunited with her “big guy.”
Val is survived by her children Jerry Halladay, Lindsey (Mindy) and their four boys, Kayden (Abby), Jaren, Carter, Tyler (Mary) and Nathan (Stephanie) and their children Wesley, John, Mary and Hugh. Val is also survived by her siblings Janice (Johnn), Bob (Michelle), Cindy, Ron (Laura), and Jackie (Rusty) and multiple nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, June 12th, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1864 Division Ave N) at 1:00pm. For those wishing to attend, visitation will be held at 12:00pm. Condolences may be made at www.gracememorial.com. Arrangements are made by
