Joyce Condon, beloved wife of the late Peter Condon, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the remarkable age of 101 years. Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Richard (Judy) Condon of Westerose, AB, and David (Janice) Condon of Medicine Hat, AB; grandchildren, Eric (Jessica) Condon of Sooke, BC, Scott (Emilie) Condon of Calgary, AB, and Rachel Condon of Medicine Hat, AB; great-grandson, August; and daughter-in-law, Karen Konigsthal of Toronto, ON. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Peter; son, Andrew; parents, Rowland and Laura Appleyard; brother, Eric Appleyard; as well as two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law in England. Joyce was born on August 1, 1924, to parents, Rowland and Laura Appleyard in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. As a child she moved with her family and grew up in Poole, Dorset, England. Before World War II, Joyce attended Parkstone Girls’ Grammar School. After completing her secondary education, Joyce proudly served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service from 1943 to 1946 as a Petty Officer Radio Mechanic in Britian and Australia. Following her military service, Joyce attended Bognor Regis Teachers’ Training College where she found her calling in educating young minds. She married the love of her life, Peter George Condon on August 13, 1949, and they immigrated to Medicine Hat together in 1956. They joined the Fifth Avenue United Church congregation in 1957, and Joyce also joined the Senior Choir and the Women’s Missionary Society. Her passion for her church showed through her becoming a charter member of United Church Women in 1962 as well as singing in the church choir for 50 years. Music, in many forms, was always a great part of her life wherever she has been, particularly choral music. She even took part in massed choirs in England and was a Charter Member of the Adele Armstrong Singers for 27 years. Joyce was so proud that her sons also have a passion for music. A stay at home mom to her three boys until they were well into school, she returned to teaching for SD #76 on a half-time contract. She greatly enjoyed her years with the children and staff, who she kept close bonds with. Ever involved in her community, Joyce held a lifetime membership with the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital Auxiliary Association as well as being a member of the Ex-Service Women’s group in Medicine Hat. In retirement, Peter and Joyce were able to travel to many different countries experiencing new cultures as well as meeting and mingling with locals at every opportunity. Joyce was blessed to live a long, full life with her beloved and loving family. The Memorial Service will be held at Fifth Avenue Memorial United Church, 476 4 St SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 1:30 pm with Rev. David Pollard officiating.
