AUDREY NEWMAN
Posted: May 1st, 2026 AUDREY NEWMAN 1933-2026
Audrey Mary Newman (Kleis), beloved wife of the late Gordon Newman, passed away with family by her side on March 24, 2026, at age 93 years. She lived happily in their longtime family home with support from family, friends, neighbours and community nursing up to her last days. Her presence, passion and prayers will be greatly missed! Left to cherish her memory is her son, David (Mary-Jean) Newman of Hinton; her daughter, Elaine (Rex) McCarthy of Medicine Hat; six grandsons, Michael (Shenaigh) and their sons, Judah and Elias, Anthony (Alyssa) and their daughter, Nova, Andrew Newman, Peter (Angela) McCarthy and their children, Evelyn and Oliver, Stephen McCarthy, and Richard McCarthy; her in-laws, Evelyn (Bert) Kleis and Harold (Erna) Jacober, as well as many dear nephews and nieces as well as their spouses. She was predeceased by her parents, Adam and Adelia (Mikolon) Kleis; three brothers, Edward (Joan) Kleis, John (Lorna) Kleis, and Bert Kleis; four sisters, infant Gertrude, Berta (Sam) Bierback, Lorraine (Bert) Leigh, and Erna Jacober; in-laws, Susanna and Alexander Newman, all their children and spouses. Audrey was born in Medicine Hat, attending Montreal St. and Alexandra High Schools. She loved to play baseball and competed in swimming. She also loved music, singing, dancing and church life. After high school, she took a three month vacation in California, returning to run her father’s tailor shop during their travels and eventually ending up in Edmonton. She enjoyed her independent life there, working and taking night classes. At a popular dance venue, she met Gordon, who became her “one true love”. They dated a little over a year and married in 1955. Starting out in Edmonton, they “waltzed” between both cities for 68 adventurous years together. Audrey was a key support in each of Gordon’s business ventures. Whether managing the home, tending the office, contributing designs or painting walls, Gordon depended on her keen eye and faithful support. Traveling took them near and far to see the sites and visit friends and family. In retirement, they both enjoyed researching and documenting family roots. Audrey treasured quiet creative times painting, gardening, photography, writing poetry, crafting cards and creating albums. But in her words, “Her greatest joy was her growing family of grandchildren and “greats”, who never ceased to amaze her.” She also loved her dear friends and extended family. She would shine with delight recalling memories or reporting on a recent call. She wanted to hear about your life and to tell you her stories. She could cover a myriad of topics, keeping informed on world events, politics, natural remedies and biblical themes. Most of all she loved her heavenly Father and was eager to help others connect with the One who had given her “life and hope” for so many years. She thrived on connections. Thank you to each of you for enriching her life.
