CAROL BARTON
Posted: May 22nd, 2026 CAROL BARTON October 9, 1942 – May 19, 2026
It is with saddened hearts that our family announces the passing of our dear wife and mother, Carol Barton on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat following a courageous and hard-fought battle with acoustic neuroma.
Carol was born October 9, 1942 in Brandon, Manitoba, and was the third youngest daughter of Harry and Agnes Hodgson. She met Clarence on a blind date in 1964, while he was there working at the Brandon Sun and they married a year later on June 19, 1965. Two winters in Manitoba were enough for Clarence and they returned to Medicine Hat where Carol got a job with the Household Finance Corporation.
This move would not last long as the printing industry took them to Penticton, Lethbridge, back to Medicine Hat and then Bow Island where they purchased the Forty Mile Commentator and Cypress Courier. While Clarence looked after production and sales, Carol ran the office on top of looking after the girls and the home. There would be one final move back to Medicine Hat in 1990.
Carol enjoyed visiting with their many friends, travelling with family as well as taking care of and cheering on her grandkids.
Cherishing Carol’s memory are her loving husband, Clarence; daughters, Joanne (Cam) Ens and Donna (Greg) Herman; grandchildren, Kristine (Darrian Craven) Ens, Ryley Ens and Brendon Herman; sister-in-law, Valerie Barton of Ottawa as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Anges Hodgson; older sisters, Joyce Tait and Jerry Hurst, younger sister, Joanne Lacey as well as Clarence’s parents, Clarence and Edith Barton.
A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Our family cannot begin to fully express our gratitude for the initial care given by nursing staff on 4 West at MH Regional Hospital as well as the exceptional care received at St. Joseph’s Home over the past 10 weeks which was above and beyond what we could have asked for. Thank You to Dr. Jonker, Dr. Monty, Dr. Dirker and Dr. Majeed for their excellent care and guidance throughout Carol’s time there.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to St. Joseph’s Home, 156 3 Street N.E., Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 5M2, or the charity of one’s choice.
