Ms. Masako Mako Tani, of Lethbridge, beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend to many, passed away peacefully at home on May 13, 2022 at the age of 77 years.
She had a true connection with nature and spent much of her time outdoors to be closer to the natural world. She also greatly enjoyed spending her time with people of all ages, from teaching Japanese at the LCI, being a regular at the Nord-Bridge Senior’s Centre and thru a lifetime of learning and shared experiences with singing, drumming, dancing, woodworking, pottery and more. Mako is survived by her sons Robert, Kenneth and Richard, grandsons Owen and Ethan, brothers Hideo and Toshiyuki and sister Taiko.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. Arrangements for a Celebration of Life will be announced in the near future.

I was very sad to see this obituary. I moved to the south coast of BC (Gulf Islands) 10 years ago and lost touch with her. I wanted to see if I could reestablish contact somehow and saw this notice.
Tani-sensei was a dear teacher and friend. I was in her first ever Japanese class at LCI and went on to get a full tuition scholarship in Japan for university and graduate school and later worked as a translator, all based on the Japanese foundation she taught me, however unconventional it was! I have many dear memories of visiting her at her eccentric home on the West side, sharing meals and crazy conversations.
My deepest condolences on your loss.
Wherever Tani-sensei is now, I hope she is still as mischievous and fun as I remember her.
