D’SOUZA DR. CYRIL D’SOUZA, much loved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026 at age 86.
Born in Mangalore, India, Cyril went on to medical school in Pondicherry and Bombay, studying general surgery. During his residency in Bombay, he met his beloved wife, Usha, an anesthesiologist. With a few pounds in their pockets, the couple immigrated to the UK in 1967 and then to Canada in 1968 – first to Edmonton, then Flin Flon, Manitoba, and then, in 1975, Lethbridge. He practiced in Lethbridge for decades, much of it as a member of Family Medical Center. He became Chief of Surgery at Chinook Regional Hospital, was named a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and published his research in the prestigious journal Surgery.
An avid cricket and basketball player as a youth, he became a fixture on the courts of the Lethbridge Tennis Club and an enthusiastic downhill skier. Dr. D’Souza retired at the young age of 55, and spent the past three decades volunteering at a hospital in St. Lucia, traveling the world with Usha and his family, golfing, woodworking, and inventing a device for practicing golf strokes.
A devoted father and doting grandparent, he was also an artist at heart, writing poetry, playing (terrible) violin and (better) guitar, and making watercolors and oil paintings that he gifted to his friends and loved ones. He was full of life, the heart of generosity, ready with a joke or a word of wisdom as the situation required.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Usha D’Souza, his daughters Aruna D’Souza and Suneeta D’Souza (Brian Beres), his grandchildren Priya D’Souza McDonough and Kiran Mohan D’Souza Beres, and his sister, Lytta Pereira.
A private family service will be held.
