KURIO, Matt

KURIO It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of MATT KURIO on July 22, 2026 at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family.
Matt will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 68 years, Clara; his son Todd Kurio (Cathy); his daughter, Roxanne Canadine (Doug); his granddaughters, Caralee (Matt), Rhianna (Kristin), Tori (Brad); and grandson, Brett. He is also survived by his brothers, Ken Kurio and Gord Kurio (Brenda), Along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Matt was born on December 8th 1935 in Sullivan British Columbia. During the Second World War, his family was displaced to Magrath, Alberta as a result of the Japanese Canadian internment. He proudly served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 15 years, with one major highlight being stationed in France for 4 years. This allowed Matt and his family to enjoy traveling throughout Europe where he experienced many different countries and cultures. Matt also had military assignments in Puerto Rico, Greenland, Sardinia and Italy.
Following his military service, Matt attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a bachelor of education degree. He began his teaching career at the high school in Stettler, Alberta. After five years of teaching, the family moved to Taber, where Matt owned and operated a Radio Shack franchise. He later worked at Kenway Chrysler before becoming a licensed stock and investment broker with Midland Walwyn in Lethbridge. He retired in 1995 after a varied and rewarding career.
Matt had a lifelong love of sports and competition. He enjoyed hockey, baseball, golf, curling and especially badminton competing regularly in the Alberta Senior Games. Whether on the court, the golf course, or cheering on his favorite teams his competitive spirit and enthusiasm never faded.
Of all his accomplishments, nothing brought Matt greater happiness than spending time with his grandchildren. He treasured every opportunity to be with them and took great pride in watching them grow.
In retirement, Matt enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Las Vegas, and he also looked forward to visits to the casino in Lethbridge. More than anything, he valued time spent with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Respecting Matt’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Lagadin and the staff of the 3A and 3B units at the Chinook Regional Hospital for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Matt.
Offerings of flowers and Koden are graciously declined.
