BERGEN-HENENGOUWEN, Margaret
Posted: September 9th, 2026 BERGEN-HENENGOUWEN MARGARET CATHERINE BERGEN-HENENGOUWEN (née van der Meer) was called home on Monday, September 7, 2026 at the age of 95 years. Her final days were marked by an endless wave of love and support, where her family left no doubt in her mind as to the level of love she brought to the world.
She is survived by her husband, Art, (she called him Aad) of 71 years as well as children: Joanne (Bob) Kubik, Diane (Frank) MacKay, Angie (Terry) Hathaway, Arnie (Malinda), Cathy (Paul) Ahsmann, Hank (Lynda), Rose (Todd) Ginther, Paul, and Marlene (Don) Gray. Oma deeply loved her 21 grandchildren and 26 great- grandchildren who all brought immense joy to her life.
Margaret was born in 1931 in Hoogmade, Netherlands. She grew up on a farm which remains in the family to this day. As the second born in the family of 13 kids, “Gre” spent much of her teen years and early adult life helping her mother run the household. That experience served her well as she and Aad left Holland in 1955 for Canada following a storybook three-year overseas courtship. The happy newlyweds settled in New Dayton and eventually Picture Butte, homesteading their farm in 1967. They raised their happy, not-so-little, family there until they retired in 1997.
Gre loved to clean, cook and care for all of the children in her life. She welcomed them, their friends, partners, spouses, their families and anyone else who entered under her roof. Her kids were her world and she did her very best to ensure they had whatever they needed to thrive. She is already so very missed.
Gre’s deep love for her Catholic faith was an enduring part of her life. It gave her the strength and comfort she extended to her family and all who entered their home.
A Prayer Vigil will be held at ST. CATHERINE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 762 Crescent Avenue, Picture Butte, AB, on Thursday, September 10, 2026 at 7:00 P.M. with Father Iqbal Khurshid officiating.
