STEENBERGEN HANS (JOHANNES) STEENBERGEN passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at the age of 96. He was predeceased by his wife Audrey of 59 years, one brother and four sisters who lived in Holland. He leaves behind his children: Jane (Ted), Art (Shelly), John (Cindy), Al (Charmaine), Chris (Jackie), and Pete (Lorraine), 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Hans was born March 23, 1930 in Hollandscheveld, Hoogeveen, Drenthe, the Netherlands to Johannes and Jantine Steenbergen. Raised in Holland, he alone immigrated to Canada to join his cousins, the Hummel family, in 1949, via a long ocean voyage and cross-country train ride, wearing wooden shoes. Apparently, he made some headlines during the journey. Hans met Audrey Vande Beek at a church function in Lethbridge and they were married in 1955. Together they raised six children; one daughter and five sons.
Hans was a very hard worker; working various jobs before the family settled in the Nobleford area where he started working for Noble Cultivators. He eventually became a foreman/supervisor. He was there for 30 plus years, before retiring in 1994.
Hans loved his family, both immediate and extended. He took great pride in his yard and keeping the carpets vacuumed. The church was extremely important to Hans. He was well known for robustly singing hymns and praise songs, worshipping his Lord and Savior. He sang right up until his last days with his health care aides, who provided him with wonderful care and attention.
He was a devout Christian and is now at peace in heaven with his Lord and Saviour!
A Funeral Service will be held at NOBLEFORD CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 522 Highway Avenue, Nobleford, AB, on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Gary van Leeuwen officiating.
The Funeral Service will be live-streamed and may be viewed through Hans’ obituary on the Cornerstone website.
A private Graveside Service will be held at the Nobleford Christian Reformed Cemetery.
