HAMEL, Gilberte “Gil”

HAMEL November 24, 1944 – September 23, 2026 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing, after a long battle with dementia, of GILBERTE “GIL” JEANNE HAMEL (née Gareau) on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at the age of 81 years. born November 24, 1944. Gil was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose greatest joy was her family.
Gil shared 65 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Normand Hamel. She dedicated herself to her family, including her mother, Ubaldine (Lucy) Gareau, who lived with them from the beginning of their marriage until her passing in 1992. Gil and Norm travelled across Canada several times and spent 17 years enjoying the sunshine in Yuma, Arizona. She was Norm’s biggest supporter, happily joining his adventures and always by his side – whether helping with a project or passing him a hammer, nails, or screws.
Gil lived for her family and was thrilled when her grandchildren and, later, her great-grandchildren came along. She treasured each of them deeply, and her love grew with every generation.
Gil was predeceased by her infant brother; her parents, Ubaldine “Lucy” and Albert Gareau; her parents-in-law, Albert and Laurette Hamel; and her brothers-in-law, Maurice and Donald Hamel.
She will be lovingly remembered by Norm; her daughters, Lynn Doratty and Susie Koennecke (Kirk); her granddaughters, Sarah Hutchinson, Stephanie Petovello (Robert), and Katie Culbertson (Josh); Kate, Grace & Colin Koennecke; her great-grandchildren, Jackson, Kacey, Bailey, Lucas and Alexander. She also leaves behind her brothers-in-law, Aurel Hamel and John Hamel (Mary), and her sister-in-law, Diane Hamilton (Rob), along with extended family and friends.
Gil’s kindness, devotion, strength, and unconditional love will live on through the family she cherished and everyone whose life she touched. The memories and love she and Norm built together will remain forever.
