MURIEL GLADYS KIRKMAN 1930 ~ 2026 Mrs. Muriel Kirkman of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Walter Kirkman, passed away at St. Therese Villa, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the age of 96 years.
She was born in Calgary, Alberta, to William and Pansy Meaker, Muriel moved to Lethbridge with her family in Grade 5. After graduating, at just 17 years old, Muriel opened her own hair salon, Muriel’s Beauty Shop, in the York Hotel.
In 1950, Muriel married Walter Kirkman, whom she first met when he moved to Lethbridge for work and boarded a room in her parents’ home. Together, they raised four children, Terry (Jane) Kirkman, Doug (Gail) Kirkman, Gail Foster, and Diane (Phil) Hewko.
Muriel was a proud mother of four, grandmother of 12, and great-grandmother of 22.
Muriel and Walter enjoyed many holidays together, with their favorites being Australia, London, Scotland, Morro Bay, and Las Vegas. She had a lifelong love of golf, enjoying many rounds at the Lethbridge Country Club and watching the game on television. Rory McIlroy was her favorite golfer to cheer on.
Muriel was a kind and caring person who was always willing to help others. Her generous heart and thoughtful nature touched the lives of everyone who knew her.
Muriel is survived by her children, Terry, Doug, and Diane, and their families; her brothers, Ken (Claire) Meaker and Don (Donna) Meaker; and her brother-in-law, Dave Tysseland.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walter; her daughter, Gail; and her sisters, Doris (Roy) Williams and Phyllis Tysseland.
Muriel’s 96 years were filled with family, wonderful holidays, cherished memories, and a life well lived. Her love will live on through the many generations of family she leaves behind, each carrying a piece of her with them. She will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, and her memory will be treasured for generations to come.
A Celebration of Muriel’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at PARADISE CANYON GOLF RESORT, 185 Canyon Boulevard West, Lethbridge, Alberta. A private family interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery.
