Aanatsiksistsakiaaki – Pretty Beaver Girl CHARLOTTE PROVOST June 8, 1954 – November 1, 2026 With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, Charlotte Provost.
Known by her Blackfoot name, Aanatsiksistsakiaaki (Pretty Beaver Girl), Charlotte was called home on November 1, 2026, in Lethbridge, Alberta, at the age of 72.
Born on June 8, 1954, in Siksika Nation to Phyllis Black Horse and Thomas Yellow Sun, Charlotte was raised with a deep connection to Kipaitapiiwahssinooni (Our Blackfoot Way of Life). Charlotte was a kipitai’poka, she was raised by her grandparents who were Martha Black Horse and Pete Black Horse. Her Grandparents were strong in Blackfoot spirituality and ceremonies and instilled in her a strong spiritual foundation. Charlotte carried these teachings throughout her life and faithfully passed them on to her children and grandchildren, ensuring that her family remained connected to their culture, values, and traditions.
Charlotte attended Old Sun Residential School and later Arrowwood High School. She completed the Health Care Aide Program in Calgary, Alberta, beginning a lifelong journey of caring for others. She was a gifted athlete who excelled in basketball, volleyball, and softball. Whether on the field, at work, or at home, Charlotte approached life with a strong spirit that inspired those around her.
In the summer of 1969, while helping her grandparents at their tipi camp during the Calgary Stampede, Charlotte met the love of her life, Mario Provost. From that moment on, they built a life together grounded in love, respect, and partnership. Through nearly six decades together, they shared countless adventures, raised a family, and stood beside one another through life’s joys and challenges. Their bond was one of devotion, friendship, and laughter. Whether travelling the horse racing circuit across Western Canada and parts of the United States, taking road trips, playing bingo, or simply spending time with family, they were happiest together. Charlotte and Mario created a home where everyone felt welcomed, cared for, and loved.
Charlotte’s greatest pride and joy were her children; family was the centre of her world. She loved unconditionally, always putting her children’s and grandchildren’s needs before her own. She taught them the importance of kindness, independence, hard work, and respect. She protected them, guided them, celebrated their accomplishments, and comforted them during difficult times. Her grandchildren held a particularly special place in her heart, and she enjoyed spoiling them with her time, attention, encouragement, and endless love. Her warm hugs, encouraging words, delicious family meals, stories, laughter, and unwavering support created a foundation of love that will continue to guide her family.
Charlotte was known for her remarkable strength of character. She was resilient, dependable, and dedicated, someone her family and friends could always count on. She faced life’s challenges with courage and grace while remaining humble and compassionate. She had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for. Her wisdom, honesty, and generosity touched many lives, and her presence comforted those around her.
She had a witty sense of humour. Charlotte loved teasing her family, sharing stories, and finding laughter in everyday moments. Her quick wit, playful spirit, and laugh brought joy to gatherings and created memories that will be cherished forever. Her laughter was comforting, familiar, and unforgettable.
Charlotte’s caring nature extended far beyond her own family. She devoted many years to serving her community through her work in the healthcare field. She worked for the Piikani Health Department for nearly 20 years, where she played an important role in developing health programs, securing funding, and supporting the department through human resources. During those years, she formed lifelong friendships, including with Vera Potts, the late Betty Smith, the late Lorraine Little Mustache, and her best friend Adeline Smith. Charlotte and Adeline shared many adventures together and supported one another while balancing work, family, and community responsibilities. Later, Charlotte worked with Piikani Education as a bussing coordinator before retiring from her role as a support worker at the Blackfoot Family Lodge. Her work reflected who she was at her core: a helper, caregiver, advocate, and friend.
Charlotte will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband, Mario Provost; her children, Clayton, Lindy, and Kelly (Annie); and her grandchildren, Matthew (Jessica), Hank, Zachary, Micah, and Mia, along with many extended family members, friends, and community members whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
She is predeceased by her parents Thomas Yellowsun & Phyllis Blackhorse, grandparents Martha & Pete Blackhorse, Augustine & Lioba Yellowsun (Drunken Chief). Her Siblings Homer Blackhorse, Glenn Blackhorse, Burton Blackhorse, Daphne Blackhorse, and Baby Claude. Her aunts and uncles Judy Blackhorse, Delphine McPhail, Jerry and Yvonne Blackhorse, Urban Blackhorse.
