BORYSPosted: April 8th, 2014
Leona Borys (nee Helfrich) was born on July 10, 1940 in Prelate, Saskatchewan. Leona passed away peacefully early Friday morning April 4 at Cedars Villa in Calgary where she lived for the past three years.
Along with her parents she moved from Prelate to Empress, AB and grew up with a big family – one of 8 children. Leona was pre-deceased by her parents John & Johanna Helfrich, farmers West of Empress. Her parents were staples of the community for many years where her dad farmed and her mother taught school. She grew up with many fun times on the farm and lots of extended family close by.
Leona attended school in Empress, AB graduating in 1957. She took her hairdressing course in Medicine Hat and worked for many years in Medicine Hat. Leona married Adam Borys in October, 1960 in Empress, AB and together they raised three boys: Rodney (1962), Corwin (1965), and Brent (1966). They divorced in 1978 and Leona moved to Calgary. After this she lived in Medicine Hat, she spent some years in Ponoka, and moved back to Calgary in June, 2011.
She liked the Cedars Villa where she lived, the smoke room inside and was happy to be back in Calgary again. To the Nurses and the staff a Big Thank you! Leona will be missed by her children, brothers and sisters; Marion (Jim) Brown of Weyburn, Sask.; Elaine (Bill) Brodie of Burstall, Sask.; Wayne (Lise) Helfrich of Vancouver, BC; Clara (Raymond) Antoni of Calgary, AB; Jack (Denise) Helfrich of Opal, AB; Sarah (Dan) VanMaarion of Airdrie, AB.; Bill (Anne) Helfrich of Medicine Hat, AB and also one Sister-in-law Maureen Helfrich of Empress, AB.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her family. Leona will be cremated and a Family Service will follow later. She will be laid to rest in the Empress Cemetery. Say not “Goodbye” for on some bright tomorrow we shall meet again!!
