With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our father, grandfather, brother, and friend; Fred Krein. Fred passed away peacefully at his home, on July 5, 2018 at the age of 89. Fred was born in Neudorf, USSR on September 22, 1928. The following year his family made the long voyage by ship to Halifax. From there, the family travelled by train to Hilda, Alberta to work on a cousin’s farm. As Fred was growing up, he attended the Sandy Point school. In 1953 he married the love of his life, Ella Doreen Schiefele. Fred and Ella were married 64 years and raised their children on the family farm. Fred served on the committee for the Sandy Point Park, and he was present to vote on the placement of the Sandy Point Bridge. Fred and Ella enjoyed a long and happy retirement that began with cross-country and cross- continent road trips in their motorhome. They also enjoyed various bus tours of both western and eastern Canada. Sadly, Ella passed away in 2015. Fred has spent the last several summers perfecting his paradise-like backyard and nurturing his prized apple trees. He filled the long winter hours enjoying emails, photos and YouTube videos on his iPad. His coffee ‘program’ included mornings and afternoons at various coffee shops with his favourite buddies. Fred was loved and is survived by his sister, Ella (Dick) Bradley; his brother, Emil (Ruth) Krein; his daughters, Linda (Dave) Duxbury and Joyce Krein; his son, Greg (Miriam) Krein; 3 granddaughters, Cheryl (Jim), Falone, Jolene (Matt); one grandson, Houston; four great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Krein and Flo Straub. In addition to his wife, Fred was predeceased by his younger brother, Gottlieb and an older brother, John Krein. The family would like to thank Shelly and Tina and all Fred’s “girls” from ‘Collette Cares ll’ for the excellent companionship they provided. By request, a private family service will be held at Hillside Cemetery. Donations in Fred’s memory may be made to Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation.
