THOMAS SCHAFER
Posted: December 27th, 20221941 ~ THOMAS SCHAFER ~ 2022 Thomas “Tom” Schafer of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at the age of 81 years. Tom leaves to cherish his memory three children, Warren (Sheila) Schafer, Bonnie (Andy) Moon and Robert (Cheryl) Schafer; grandchildren, Sonya Schafer, Karl Schafer, Chris (Kendra) Moon, Lacey (Robby) Taylor, Alex (Sarah) Moon, Danny (Ally) Moon, Kenneth Schafer, Shelbey Schafer (Jean-Francois Dussault), Brandon (Whitney) Mutschler, Brodie Mutschler; 12 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents, John and Maria Schafer; his wife, Magdalena Schafer; infant son, Kenneth Schafer; and sister, Betty Koehler. Tom grew up in various places in Saskatchewan. He met the love of his life, Maggie, in 1956 and they married in 1961. They moved to Medicine Hat in 1962 to raise their three children. He spent many weekends at the lake fishing with family and friends. Tom worked in various groceries stores, even when they moved to Biggar, SK in 1980. When they returned to Medicine Hat in 1986, he worked at different jobs including driving a tow truck for Phil’s Towing. Tom and Maggie embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii along with Betty and Bert. This supplied many fond memories and stories. He retired after his massive heart attack in 1996. Horseshoes were a passion for Tom for years. He was extremely proud to earn a bronze medal at the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Provincials in July 2019 playing horseshoes. Over the years he has been an avid sports fan and you could find him watching the game on tv while cheering for the Oilers, the Blue Jays, and the Eskimo’s or Saskatchewan Rough Riders. Tom loved to hear how his family was doing and holding the little ones. A Memorial Service will be held in the spring to pay tribute to Tom.
