BRIAN JOHNSTON

BRIAN EARL JOHNSTON 1941 – 2026
With deep sadness, the family of Brian Johnston announce his tragic passing on Friday, August 7th, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Brian left this world at the age of 84, with his family by his side.
Brian was born on November 12th, a date that would one day become even more meaningful when his twin grandchildren, Meagan and Regan, arrived into the world on his birthday. He shared 59 beautiful years of marriage with his wife, Diane, and together they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary in September.
Brian was a proud father to Dionne (Jason) Mosher and Brent (Leigh Anne); and a deeply cherished grandfather to Meagan and Regan. He is also survived by his brothers, Dennis (Joan) and Grant; as well as Diane’s brothers, Duane, Doug (Nancy), and Don (Diana); along with many nieces and nephews who adored him. He was predeceased by his parents, Ronald and Esther Johnston; Diane’s parents, Arnold and Helen Beglaw; and sistersinlaw, Sheila Johnston and Agnes Beglaw.
Brian’s working life began with the CPR as an agent, and in 1967 he joined Alberta Gas Trunk Line a career that would span 30 years. His work took the family to Cavendish, Princess, Hussar, Whitecourt, and Edson before they settled in Medicine Hat in 1992. Brian never complained about the long days or the moves; instead, he often said how fortunate he felt to have had such steady, meaningful work. When he retired in 1998, he traded pipelines for fairways. For nearly 17 years, Monday through Friday, the golf course became his “job,” and he approached each round with the same dedication and joy he brought to everything else.
Away from work and golf, Brian found pleasure in the quiet challenges of jigsaw puzzles never anything under 1000 pieces and in his daily walks, always aiming for his 10,000 steps. He loved to tease, to laugh, and to find humour in the everyday. His gentle nature, warm smile, and easy kindness made him someone people felt comfortable around. Brian was, simply put, a loving gentleman.
He will be remembered for his steady presence, his playful spirit, and the way he made life lighter for those around him. Brian will be deeply missed by all who knew him and forever loved by those who called him family.
