RUSSELL HUGH FARRELL 1944 ~ 2026
It is with profound sadness that the family of Russell Hugh Farrell announces his passing on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the age of 81 years. Russ was born on October 3, 1944, in Whitehorse, Yukon, to Rae and Margaret Farrell. He was the oldest of three boys. Russ grew up in various communities, including Carcross, Edmonton, Calgary and Dawson Creek. He played and excelled at many sports but was most notably a prodigious young amateur golfer who won numerous tournaments in the Dawson Creek area. Russ eventually pursued a career as head golf professional. He began his career as an associate professional in Ontario before returning to Alberta, where he joined the Calgary Golf and Country Club and later Shawnee Slopes Golf Course in Calgary. With great pride, Russ obtained his first position as head golf professional at Shawnee Slopes Golf Course in 1972. While residing in Calgary in 1968, Russ met the love of his life, Kathleen Judge, who was a nursing student at Holy Cross Hospital. Upon learning that Kathy was dating a golf professional, her family wondered what Russ’ “real job” was. Russ and Kathy were married in 1969 and welcomed two children, Andrea (Lucas) in 1972 and Bryce in 1974. During their frequent trips to Medicine Hat to visit Kathy’s family, Russ eventually made his way to the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club. After becoming well acquainted with the local golfing community through giving lessons, Russ was asked if he would be interested in moving to Medicine Hat to become the club’s first head golf professional. He gladly accepted the position and remained with the club from 1976 until his retirement in 2000. Following his retirement, Russ enjoyed many years of travelling, which allowed him to pursue his passion for photography. He became a grandfather in 2008 and cherished the time he spent with his grandson, Caden, attending soccer practices, games and tournaments. At heart, Russ was happiest and most content spending time with his family, enjoying coffee with friends and relaxing at home with the family’s many dogs. Russ will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humour and easy-going demeanour. Russ is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Dave Lucas; son, Bryce; grandson, Caden Lucas; and brothers, Roger and Rae Farrell.
Those who wish to honour Russ with a donation, may do so to the S.P.C.A. – (55 Southwest Drive SW, Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 8E8). In accordance with Russ’ wishes, no public service will be held. To leave a message of condolence you may visit www.pattisonfuneralhome.com.
