It is with heavy hearts that the family of Elizabeth Louise “Betty” Staples, beloved wife of Barrie Staples, announces her passing on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in Lethbridge, Alberta, at the age of 69 years. Betty was born on March 12, 1957, in Medicine Hat, Alberta, to George and Jean Hall. She grew up in Medicine Hat, where she enjoyed baton twirling and proudly participated in the Medicine Hat Stampede Parade. During her younger years, Betty was also honoured to serve as a Queen of Job’s Daughters, an experience she fondly remembered. She graduated from Medicine Hat High School before continuing her education at Garbutt’s Business College. On September 3, 1977, Betty married the love of her life, Barrie Harvey Staples, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, family, and countless cherished memories. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 49 years, Barrie; their three children, Erin (Michael) Taylor, Diane Staples, and Mark Staples; and her two treasured grandchildren, Phoenix Staples and Connell Taylor, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. She is also survived by her siblings, Linda (Richard) Bide, Kathy (Gary) Hall Deibert, Bob (Marci) Hall, and Jim (Sonia) Hall, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and colleagues. Betty was predeceased by her parents, George and Jean Hall. Throughout her working years, Betty enjoyed a diverse and rewarding career. She held positions as a bank teller with the Bank of Montreal, a paralegal with Pritchard Learner Law, and a school secretary and librarian with Medicine Hat School District No. 76. She was also a Mary Kay consultant. No matter the role, Betty brought dedication, a strong work ethic, kindness, and a genuine interest in the people around her. Betty believed in giving back to her community and generously volunteered her time over the years. She served as a board member for Elkwater Golf Course and continued to support its various events. She was also a past member of the City of Medicine Hat Recreation Board and was actively involved with Brownies and Girl Guides when her children were young. Betty embraced life with enthusiasm and enjoyed a wide variety of activities, including curling, bowling, swimming, golfing, and cheering on the Medicine Hat Tigers. She loved sewing clothes for her children when they were young and later enjoyed creating beautiful diamond art. Camping, travelling, and cruising became especially meaningful adventures during her retirement, allowing her to explore new places and create wonderful memories with those she loved. Friendship was an important part of Betty’s life. Since her high school days, she shared countless adventures, laughter, and special memories with dear friends Archie and Inge Eremenko, Jack and Gayle Lemire, Viv Moch, Jenine Scheuerman, and many others too numerous to mention. These lifelong friendships were a source of great happiness and remained close to her heart. Above all else, Betty treasured her family. Spending time with her grandchildren was truly the highlight of her life, and she cherished every opportunity to be part of their lives. Whether visiting family and friends, sharing stories, enjoying a camping trip, or simply being together, Betty found her greatest happiness in the company of those she loved. Betty will be remembered for her unmistakable, big, infectious laugh that could brighten any room. She was kind, caring, compassionate, hardworking, and devoted to her family and friends. Always willing to lend a helping hand, Betty had a way of making others feel welcome and appreciated. A lifelong dog lover, she also had a special place in her heart for her four-legged companions. Her warmth, generous spirit, wonderful sense of humour, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Although her passing leaves an immeasurable void, the memories she created and the love she shared will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever. A private family blessing will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel. Visitation will take place at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel on Friday, November 6, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with all who wish to pay their respects welcome to attend. A Come-and-Go Celebration of Betty’s Life will take place at the Medicine Hat Golf Course on Sunday, November 8, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and friendship. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the local SPCA, in honour of her lifelong love of animals. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, the Jack Ady Cancer Centre in Lethbridge, the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre in Medicine Hat, and the paramedic and nursing services in both cities for their compassionate care and support. Special thanks are also extended to Betty’s personal physician, Dr. I. Filanti, and family friend Megan Logan for their kindness, care, and support. Betty’s laughter may be silent, but the love she gave, the friendships she treasured, and the beautiful memories she created will echo in our hearts forever.
