1919 ~ 2013

Mrs. Hazel Valentine Henderson passed away peacefully at the Havenview, South Country Village in Medicine Hat on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the age of 94 years.  Hazel was brought into this world by proud parents, William and Bessie Robertson on February 14, 1919 in Calgary.  She grew up in Calgary where she would later meet a handsome Naval Officer, Robert Henderson.  They were married on June 22, 1943.  Being married to a Naval Officer meant living in different communities and cities including Montreal and New York City.  Their final move would be to Medicine Hat and it quickly became home.  They built a house, made it a home and were blessed with raising two children, Andrea and David.  Hazel joined the LDS Church in 1977 and became a devoted member serving in many capacities.  Following the untimely death of her husband, Robert in 1978, her church family embraced her and became a big part of her life.  In the church she met many wonderful families including her ‘adoptive family’, the Flemings.  She truly felt they were her family.  Hazel was a member of the IODE and PEO, loved  music and really enjoyed to dance!  She had a wonderful personality that drew people to her – she was kind, caring and loving. All these characteristics naturally made her well liked and respected by all those who knew her.  She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Andrea Baker of Medicine Hat;  grandchildren, Mona of Calgary and Owen of Medicine Hat;  a sister, Delora Robertson and “sister”, Anne Clouston both of Calgary; the Fleming family as well as numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.  She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; a son, David and his wife Shirley; son-in-law, Rick Baker; her parents and four brothers.   The Funeral Service will be announced at a later date.  Those wishing to pay their respects may do so in the Relief Society Room of the Church beginning one hour (10:00 A.M) prior to the Funeral Service until 10:45 A.M.  Private family interment will take place later in the afternoon.   (Condolences may be expressed by visiting www.cooksouthland.com)  Memorial donations in Hazel’s name may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta, 401D – 3rd Street S.E., Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 0G8.  Honoured to serve the family is Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13th Street S.W.
